How to check if your website is mobile responsive

Have you ever wanted to purchase something but find yourself second-guessing the credibility of the business when you land on their website and it’s glitchy, messy or just plain doesn’t make sense?

I was visiting a website on my phone (that I normally view on my desktop) the other day, when the buttons I needed to click kept popping out of view and the alignment of the elements on the page was clearly not right. It made me immediately wonder just how legit this business was if they couldn’t even offer a website that works properly on my phone. Have you ever been in a similar situation? It’s honestly just downright frustrating and nothing makes me leave a site faster.

This day and age, if your website is not mobile-friendly, you’re going to lose viewers (and credibility) faster than you can say “no, wait!”

With the majority of internet users looking at websites on their phones, optimizing your site for mobile use is absolutely crucial in guaranteeing you won’t miss out on a significant potential audience.

Maybe you’re part of the minority (like us) who still resorts to the computer when you really want to get things done. However, mobile-friendly website design is not about you, but about them… About catering to the needs and preferences of your audience. It's not just a trend, but a necessity for ensuring a positive user experience, boosting engagement, and ultimately achieving your website's goals.

So you already have a website, but how do you know if it’s mobile-friendly?

To check the mobile responsive (or mobile-friendliness) of your website, follow these steps:

  1. Open your website on a mobile device: Use a smartphone or tablet to visit your website. Check if the website layout adjusts itself automatically to fit the device screen size.

  2. Check for horizontal scrolling: Make sure you don't have to scroll horizontally to view the entire content of your website. Mobile-friendly websites generally have the content resized and rearranged to fit the smaller screen, eliminating the need for horizontal scrolling.

  3. Review the text size and readability: Check if the text on your website is easily readable on a smartphone or tablet. It should be legible without zooming in or out. Mobile-responsive websites often have font sizes that adjust to the device screen size, ensuring optimal readability.

  4. Clickable elements: Make sure that all the links, buttons, and interactive elements on your website are easily clickable on a touch screen. They should have enough space between them to prevent accidental touches.

  5. Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool: Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool to get a thorough analysis of your website's mobile responsiveness. This tool can identify any issues that may impact the user experience on mobile devices.

If you followed these steps and found a few issues, it likely time to make some updates to optimize your website so you don’t miss another opportunity to grow your business.
